Mai Al-Nakib
Mai Al-Nakib (born 1970) is a writer and the author of the collection of short stories, ''The Hidden Light of Objects'', published by Bloomsbury in 2014. The collection won the Edinburgh International Book Festival's 2014 First Book Award. Her short stories have appeared in Ninth Letter and The First Line.
Mai Al-Nakib was born in Kuwait in 1970, she was 19 when Saddam Hussein ordered the attack on Kuwait. She holds a PhD in English literature from Brown University and is currently an associate professor of post-colonial studies and comparative literature at Kuwait University. ''The Hidden Light of Objects'' is her first collection of short stories.〔Pierce, Peter. "Book Review: The Hidden Light of Objects by Mai al-Nakib." The Sydney Morning Herald. Fairfax Media, 22 Aug. 2014. Web. 29 Apr. 2015. .〕
Mai Al-Nakib writes and focuses mainly on the political, cultural and ethnic aspects of Middle Eastern life. Aside from writing novels, she has contributed to many articles on these very topics. She also contributes quite extensively to social media and lecture series at various universities to spread word about issues described in her books and articles. Although she is of Middle Eastern decent, she writes strictly in English for her works. Mai Al-Nakib lives mainly in Kuwait while she is teaching but spends summers in Greece where she works on her novels.〔East, Ben. The short stories she has been working on since 2006 are compiled in ''The Hidden Light of Objects''. As Erika Banerji wrote, "Al-Nakib has exceptional eye for the bruised landscape of the modern Middle East. The stories feel real, born of hard-won experience." The book, ''The Hidden Light of Objects'', was published in 2015 by Bloomsberg, and contains 10 densely wrought stories, interleaved with (vignettes ).
“I wouldn't say they are autobiographical, but I do feel living in this part of the world there is always a feeling of instability lurking somewhere,” she says. “That, perhaps, your home is never quite your home. When I was much younger, I would ask myself, ‘If something happens, what would I take with me?’ – and I actually had a bag of things I kept in the cupboard."
“I’m not sure how I acquired that feeling of impermanence, but everything I have become is because of these instabilities and uncertainties. Do I even want to belong to a place? I’m not so sure.” Al Nakib hopes to soon write a full novel – which will have some of the same themes, if not the same characters.〔East, Ben. There is a young girl, named Amerika in honour of the US role in the liberation of Kuwait, finds her name has become a barometer of her country’s growing hostility towards the West. A self-conscious Palestinian teenager is drawn into a botched suicide bombing by two belligerent classmates. A middle-aged man dying from cancer looks back on his extramarital affairs and the abiding forgiveness of his wife. A Kuwaiti woman returns to her family after being held captive in Iraq for a decade.〔GoodReads. "The Hidden Light of Objects." GoodReads. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Apr. 2015. .〕
